Combating plaque and bad breath

Dental care is just as important for dogs as it is for us; keeping their teeth and gums in good condition ensures they can eat, play and stay fit and healthy throughout their lives. Your dog’s teeth develop a build-up of plaque just like ours do. When plaque isn’t brushed away, it hardens and forms tartar which, if not treated, can cause gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). This may lead to bacteria entering the bloodstream, causing damage to vital organs, such as the kidneys, liver and heart.

Full range of dental care products at Pet Essentials.

At Pet Essentials our fully trained staff can advise you on your pets dental hygiene needs and discuss our comprehensive range of toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental chews.

Natural rawhide chews and specially-designed dental toys are a great way of keeping teeth strong and healthy. Chewing is a natural behaviour for dogs, so ensuring they have something to bite on will keep their jaw muscles strong, avoid boredom, and save your furniture! Specific dental products may also help; polyphosphate minerals can be used in diets, and work by staying on the teeth after meals to reduce tartar build up. Cleaning your dog’s teeth is easier than it sounds; all you need to do is brush with a dog-friendly toothbrush and a toothpaste that your dog finds palatable! It only takes a few minutes each day, and ensures that your dog’s teeth are healthy and comfortable. Start by rubbing the doggie toothpaste into your dog’s gums with your finger, introduce the brush a few days later always remembering to treat your dog after each session. You may find it difficult to start, but over time your dog will get used to the action. Alternatively, you can speak to your vet or one of our trained staff, who will be able to give you some advice on best practice and make sure you’re doing everything you can to maintain your dog’s dental hygiene.
